Maramec Spring - July 27th 2024

The following recordings were a bit of a happy accident. On a weekend trip to pick up a rug and get out of town, my partner and I decided to visit Maramec Spring – a natural spring and trout hatchery near St. James, Missouri. It was rainy, and a little cold, but we still decided to make the most of it of course.

The rain and July heat created a thick, consistent mist over the entire spring. It turned out to be pretty magical, and I ran around with my microphone and camera trying to capture something to preserve it.

There’s sounds of families feeding trout, individuals enjoying the day, and everyone quickly taking shelter at times. There was the steady roar of a distant dam, with the patter of the rain and bird’s summer songs. I’m not sure how enjoyable these recordings are to listen to, but hey I tried.

The Konza Prarie - July 9th 2023

The following piece is a series of recordings made throughout mid-morning and late afternoon at the Konza Prairie Biological Station located in Manhatten, KS on July 9th, 2023.

At the start of the day, the goal was to capture a physical place in time. Doing that in a way that might be thought of “clean” or “pure” quickly proved impossible.
Fellow hikers, planes overhead, etc seemed to bleed through the environment I was attempting to capture.

Even more quickly, it became evident that these sounds are not separate or even adjacent to the land, but are an absolute part of the same ecosystem. Equals of the grasshoppers and wind that occupy the same space and time.
